Insulation and ventilation

In addition to wrapping water lines and isolating any water tanks for a gravity-fed system, ventilation is key to managing condensation in your attic.

Conversion rule

This is a controversial regulation rooted in the vital need for adequate exhaust and ventilation, especially in bedrooms, but many building professionals view the requirement for free space as obsolete in an age where we are desperately looking for more space in the building envelope, at low cost, without the need for planning.

Our understanding of healthy air exchange and available devices to keep the air fresh has improved incomprehensibly.

Willie Busteed, who runs specialist attic conversion business Busteed & Sons Attic Conversions Ltd (Cork) with his son Wayne, explains the process in more detail.

“Building permission for attic conversions is a gray area. We always advise all our potential clients to contact planning.

“Irish roofs, in general, have a 30 degree pitch which in most cases will not lend itself to class as habitable. Normally planning is required if you are converting to habitable or Velux windows need to be positioned in front or on the side of It is also required if a skylight is installed.

“To qualify as habitable, a certain ceiling height of 2.4m must be reached and this ceiling must measure half the width of the room in length at 1.5m diagonally. It’s complicated.”

In addition, to be habitable, all ceilings on the first floor must meet a certain fire resistance, he adds.

“All doors on the first floor must be half-hour fire doors and the frames and stair clearance must be two meters and lead unobstructed to an exit, says Willie.

“We send all detailed customer measurements etc to our structural engineer who has to do calculations on the changes to the roof structure and he designs the steel beams to be used in each individual conversion and new roof restructuring so that they may approve its structure.

“We insulate to height standards of course. We also get certification from our electrician to make sure everything is tested to RECI standards.

“We do everything to modern standards, even if it is classified as non-habitable. Once the steels are in place and all the structural work is completed, our structural engineer visits and signs the restructuring even if it is non-habitable, giving to the owner complete peace of mind.

“We photograph all the work every day and clients have this and a certification if they decide to sell their property.”

Floor

Getting around the attic, especially without a proper “cut” roof, is hard enough, and usually a forest of killer trusses. Do not climb there without a mask, as the tiny particles created by dust and insulating materials can irritate the lungs.

Where you can floor, the attic becomes much more accessible and less stressful to visit. It is essential to ensure that the ground is stable and safe for beginners and to avoid ramming a bat or blowing insulation designed to trap pockets of hot air to remain thermally efficient.

Deep insulation can be higher than your joists. Just because you can see the joists doesn’t mean they’re stable enough to lay down the floor directly.

If in doubt, consult a specialist company or structural engineer for advice. While you’re struggling up there, make sure any recessed fixtures in the ceiling below are F-cap approved or installed in attic caps to keep them from overheating under your attic insulation batts.

You don’t need to cover the whole attic and you can add walkways to storage areas or say your PV array battery (if it’s high up) rather than covering every square yard.

You may need new floating joists which ensure that you are not stressing the joists resting on the ceiling at the bottom or pushing down your 300m insulation blanket.

Consider adding simple storage shelves in the eaves to lift all the boxes of stuff off the ground.

Flooring work must be followed by a certificate of compliance issued by an engineer to show potential buyers and surveyors that the work meets current building regulations.

Willie Busteed adds: “Over the last few years there has been a huge comeback from carpeted attic owners. Some would use semi-solid and solid laminate flooring. Prices for these all vary depending on the level of complexity of the fit and are priced individually.

Stairs

Fire regulations regarding attic conversions are meticulous and will require a series of upgrades for an unfinished attic and its access. It would be wise to follow them even when planning is not required.

Chief among these is a regulation level staircase – it is not a pull-out attic staircase. The problem is often sacrificing space at the base of the stair to accommodate its footprint and height – ask your engineer or architect to review your plans.

Spoil that with a DIY disaster, and you’re looking at a major structural modification to skip planning now or in the future when your adventures are discovered by a surveyor.

In addition to providing new means of escape, you will install fire doors, fire resistant materials and a fire detection and alarm system in this second or third floor space – it all makes sense .

Otherwise, in an undeveloped storage situation, access will be via a ladder or retractable staircase.

What not to store in an attic

If the attic isn’t a finished space with heating and ventilation to a livable level, it’s likely to be subject to some pretty wild fluctuations in heat and humidity that you won’t experience downstairs.

Any open boxes should not be stuck there for long periods of time.

Most attics have at least one or two seasonal mice, so fabrics, paper, stuffed toys, carpets, leather, and upholstery are vulnerable to biting, as well as attention from moths, silverfish, beetles, wasps, as well as the droppings of bats and nesting birds.

Mold and decay can quickly set in due to the foul atmosphere.

Use rigid plastic boxes sealed with snap-on lids if you must put smaller, sensitive materials overhead, and periodically check their condition (even vintage clothes will rot in this setting over time). The Samla boxes from Ikea are ideal at €5.50 each.

In a recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicineresearchers evaluated the effectiveness of maternal messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccinations during pregnancy against hospitalization for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in infants younger than 6 months of age.

Background

Infants younger than six months are at increased risk of complications from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and are not eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines. Transplacental transfers of maternal anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies after vaccination of mothers against SARS-CoV-2 could confer immune protection to their infants against SARS-CoV-2.

The authors of the present study previously reported that the risk of COVID-19-associated hospitalization was 61% lower in infants under 6 months of age born to mothers who received double vaccination (mRNA) during pregnancy when the SARS-CoV-2 Delta (B.1.617.2) variant was dominant.

About the study

In the present case-control study, the researchers extended their previous analysis by exploring the protective role of mRNA vaccination of pregnant women against COVID-19-associated hospitalization in infants <6 months of age during SARS dominance. -CoV-2 Omicron (B.1.1.259) variant. Compared to their previous study, the present study included a much larger sample size, i.e. more than 361 and 309 case infants and control infants, respectively.

The study was conducted between July 1, 2021 and March 8, 2022 and included infants with COVID-19 associated hospitalizations (case infants) and infants without COVID-19 associated hospitalizations (control infants) at 30 pediatric hospitals of 22 states. The infant cases were identified using ongoing active surveillance data from the centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) – funded to overcome the COVID-19 network.

Data were obtained on demographic parameters, history of COVID-19, and clinical outcomes of existing disease via electronic medical records and by interviewing parents (or guardians) of infants. Maternal vaccination information such as vaccination dates, doses received, whether mothers were vaccinated during pregnancy, site where mothers were vaccinated, vaccine manufacturers, and availability of COVID-19 vaccination cards have been obtained.

Data was also obtained for hospitalizations associated with COVID-19, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and critical cases of COVID-19 requiring life-saving interventions or resulting in death. Life-sustaining interventions included noninvasive mechanical ventilation (continuous or bilevel positive airway pressure), invasive mechanical ventilation, vasoactive infusions, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

All infant cases were diagnosed positive for SARS-CoV-2 by antigen testing or reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) within ten days of symptom onset or three days after hospitalization. Mothers were considered fully vaccinated if they received double doses of mRNA-1273 or BNT162b2 vaccines.

Women who received the initial dose of vaccine before pregnancy and the second dose of vaccine after pregnancy were included in the analysis. Since protective immunity builds after approximately two weeks of vaccination, cases of infants born to mothers vaccinated less than 14 days before delivery were excluded from the analysis.

Additionally, infants born to mothers who received mRNA triple vaccination (n = 29 infants) or who were vaccinated with the Ad26.COV2.S vaccine without mRNA (n = 13 infants) were excluded due to the low number of pregnant women in these two categories. Vaccine efficacy was estimated by comparing the odds of COVID-19 severity in the two groups of infants born to fully immunized mothers during pregnancy in the Delta-predominant periods (between July 1, 2021 and December 18, 2021) and Omicron-dominant (between December 19, 2021 and March 8, 2022).

Results

The analysis was performed for 537 and 512 case and control infants, respectively. Of the infant cases, 181 infants were hospitalized for Delta infections and 356 infants were hospitalized for Omicron infections. The average age of study participants was two months. About 16% and 29% of case infants and control infants, respectively, are born to women fully vaccinated during pregnancy.

Compared to cases of infants born to mothers who were not fully immunized during pregnancy (n=450 infants), cases of infants born to women fully immunized during pregnancy (n=87 infants) had lower admissions in ICU (23% versus 13%). Additionally, infants had lower critical SARS-CoV-2 infection (12% versus 9%), invasive mechanical ventilation requirements (7% versus 3%), noninvasive mechanical ventilation requirements (8 % versus 6%) and vasoactive ventilation infusion requirements (3% versus 1%) compared to control infants.

Of the infant cases, 21% (n=113) were admitted to intensive care, of which 12% (n=64) received vasoactive infusions or mechanical ventilation. The deaths of two case infants due to COVID-19 have been reported, and two case infants required extracorporeal membrane oxygen supplementation, neither of whose mothers received mRNA double vaccination during her pregnancy.

The efficacy of complete maternal mRNA vaccinations against COVID-19-associated hospitalization in infants has been reported to be 52%, with 80% efficacy during Delta-dominance and 38% efficacy during Omicron-dominance . Efficacy was 70% against ICU admission associated with COVID-19 and 47% against hospitalization not requiring ICU admission. Furthermore, the effectiveness was 38% and 69% when mothers were vaccinated during the first 20 weeks of gestation and after 20 weeks of gestation, respectively.

Overall, the study results showed that maternal full (double dose) mRNA vaccination reduced the risk of COVID-19-associated hospitalizations in infants younger than 6 months.

Positive air pressure and exhaust ventilation systems are designed to ensure that contaminants are continually prevented from entering an area or are removed from an area to maintain a safe and healthy enclosed environment. These specialized room air systems use fans to maintain a higher than ambient air pressure environment inside a designated area to ensure clean, contamination-free air and/or fans to powerful extraction to eliminate dangerous fumes. With its SIL 2 rating, the highly accurate and reliable FLT93F flowmeter is ideal for use when these sensitive application environments are part of a Safety Instrumented System (SIS) requirement.

The FCI model FLT93F flowmeter is specially designed for air and gas flow detection. It both responds quickly and is able to detect even very slight changes in airflow. They are available in a variety of process connections to facilitate installation in most sizes of pipe, vent or conduit. Its universal power supply supports 115 VAC, 230VAC or 24 VDC power supply. Its trip/alarm points are easily user definable in the field during installation. It comes standard with fail-safe dual alarm (SPDT) or DPDT relay outputs, rated for 6 amps at 115 VAC, 240 VAC, or 24 VDC.

The flow sensor element of the FLT93F flow switch is fully welded and constructed from premium 316L stainless steel. It has no moving parts to break or vents to clog or clog, so no routine maintenance is required. The flow control instrument is available in a choice of rugged all-metal enclosures that are NEMA 4X/IP66 rated for long life in the most demanding installations and environments. The electronics can be integrated into the flow element or mounted remotely away from hazardous areas.

For applications in potentially explosive dust or gas environments, the FLT93F is also suitable for installation in Div.1/Zone 1 and certified to local FM, FMc, ATEX, IECEx, NEPSI, EAC, Inmetro standards , UKCA and EQM/ECAS. It also complies with CE directives for EMC and LVD and the flow element meets the requirements of the Canadian Electrical Code ANSI/ISA 12.27.01-2011 as a single joint device.

Ontario reported 10 net new COVID-19 deaths on Thursday as the number of patients breathing on ventilators fell to its lowest level since the month the province first instituted a mask mandate.

The Department of Health said seven of the deaths occurred within the past 30 days and three more occurred before that time.

One death involved a long-term care resident.

There have been 49 deaths in the past seven days, 342 in the past 30 days and 13,314 in total.

Hospitals reported 549 admitted patients who tested positive for COVID-19, up 27 from Wednesday but down 121 from this point last week.

Of those, 118 were in intensive care, up four from Wednesday but down one from this point last week.

Forty-four patients were breathing on a ventilator, the lowest overall population of ventilated COVID-19 patients seen in the province since October 19, 2020.

On Wednesday, Chief Medical Officer Dr Kieran Moore said the mask mandate for transit properties and hospitals would expire on June 11.

Ontario first introduced a mask mandate in indoor public spaces on October 2, 2020.

Various hospitals have said they will continue to require masks beyond that date.

UHN infectious disease specialist Dr. Isaac Bogoch said the public should understand that there may be a future reintroduction of mask rules if conditions worsen, particularly this fall.

“There are going to be peaks and valleys of COVID-19, we expect to see an increase in cases in the fall and winter, and you might expect the recommendations to change at that time when d ‘Other settings might ask people to put on return masks,’ he told CP24.

Ontario’s positive trend continues, according to the Science Advisory Table, citing wastewater monitoring data showing declining virus signal in all regions of the province.

Of the 907 cases confirmed Thursday by PCR tests, 87 were in unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people, 141 were in people with two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, 541 were in people with three or more doses and the vaccination status of 138 others was not known.

Provincial labs processed 9,777 test samples in the previous 24 hours, generating a positivity rate of 6.6%.

Average weekly positivity rose from 8.3% last week to 7.1% this week.

The Health Ministry says 13,556 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered on Wednesday.

Of these, 807 were first doses, 985 were second doses, 1,608 were third doses, and 10,156 were fourth doses.

SAN FRANCISCO — Treatment with imatinib resulted in sustained clinical benefit after 90 days in hospitalized patients with hypoxemic COVID-19, according to results from the CounterCOVID study.

At the American Thoracic Society International Conference, Job R. Schippers, MD-PhD candidate in Pulmonary Medicine at Amsterdam University Medical Center, presented long-term clinical results at 90 days after treatment with imatinib.

Imatinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that is currently being used as an oncology drug to block an abnormal protein that signals cancer cells, according to an ATS press release.

“Imatinib was considered a treatment option when it became apparent that patients with severe COVID-19 had CT scan abnormalities suggestive of pulmonary edema… as a result of vascular leakage,” Schippers said in the press release.

Results from a recent clinical trial demonstrated a benefit of imatinib treatment over a 28-day follow-up in patients with hypoxemic COVID-19, with the greatest improvement in critically ill patients, the researchers said.

Researchers assessed longer-term clinical outcomes in 385 patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Patients were randomly assigned to imatinib (n=197) or placebo (n=188) for 10 days. Long-term outcomes included 90-day mortality, duration of invasive ventilation, ventilator-free days, duration of ICU admission, duration of hospitalization, and ventilator parameters.

At 90 days, 9.1% of patients who received imatinib and 16.5% of patients who received placebo died (HR=0.53; 95% CI, 0.29-0.94; P = .03), according to the abstract. This result remained significant after researchers adjusted for baseline imbalances, including gender, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease (HR=0.52; 95% CI, 0.28-0.99 ; P = .045), according to the summary.

The median number of ventilator-free days was 84 for ICU patients who received imatinib, compared with 64 days for those who received a placebo (P= 0.036) and the median duration of invasive ventilation was 7 days versus 12 days, respectively (P= .026), according to the summary.

The mean length of ICU stay was 9 days in the imatinib group versus 15 days in the placebo group (P= 0.098) and mean hospital stay was 7 days versus 6.5 days, respectively (P= .66).

Patients who were intubated and treated with imatinib had a significantly better longitudinal course of FiO2 (P < 0.0001), report the researchers in the abstract.

According to the researchers, the clinical benefit observed at 90 days could be explained by the improvement in oxygenation parameters.
