UM drops mask mandate for most indoor spaces, events – Press and Guide

Offices, residence halls and sporting events will no longer have mask mandates on all three University of Michigan campuses.

Classrooms, buses, patient care areas and COVID-19 testing sites on campus will still require masks, but they will be optional everywhere else starting March 14.

According to campus officials, the decision to change the policy was made possible due to high vaccination rates among students, faculty and staff as well as improving conditions in the area/
The updated policy applies to all students, faculty, staff and visitors – regardless of their vaccination status – on campuses in Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint. The Dearborn and Flint campuses will communicate the policy directly to their respective campuses.

Additionally, the Campus COVID-19 Health Response Committee released new community guidelines that no longer require guests attending Michigan indoor sporting events to present proof of vaccination or a COVID-19 test. 19 negative.

The advice reflects the latest recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is supported by a majority of the UM community being up to date on their COVID-19 vaccinations – 89% of students and 85% of employees, excluding Michigan Medicine — according to the university’s immunization dashboard.

“As the rate of COVID-19 activity declines on campus and our state and region transitions from a ‘response’ phase to a ‘recovery’ phase of the pandemic, the Campus Health Response Committee releases new guidelines regarding the on-campus COVID response, said Robert Ernst, Associate Vice President of Student Life for Health and Wellness and Director of CHRC.

“Mask use is still an effective strategy for enhanced personal protection, especially for people with compromised immune status, those who are unvaccinated or up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccinations, and anyone with a perceived increased situational risk.”

Other COVID-19 mitigation measures that remain in place include:

• UM’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy which requires students, faculty, and staff to stay current with COVID-19 vaccinations.

•Maintain the availability of free COVID-19 testing on campus through the Community Sampling and Tracking Program.

• Weekly testing remains mandatory for members of the UM community who are exempt from the vaccination policy.

• Meet or exceed the standards set by the CDC for classroom ventilation, as well as the Michigan Building Code’s heating and cooling system requirements for airflow at maximum occupancy.

• Quarantine and Isolation housing space remains available for students who require space to quarantine or self-isolate.
