Meijer awarded EPA for low refrigerant leakage rate

Meijer has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency for its efforts to reduce refrigerant leaks.

The Midwestern retailer has been recognized by the EPA’s GreenChill program for having the lowest company-wide refrigerant emissions rate among all GreenChill partners in the past year. Meijer has focused on reducing its refrigerant leak rate for at least 12 years and is now 18.2% below the industry average. Meijer has been participating in the program since 2012 and has continuously reduced refrigerant emissions in its 257 supercenters.

In 2020 Meijer also won the following awards:

  • Superior Objective Achieved for having achieved its refrigerant leak rate objective by installing leak detection systems, following rigorous maintenance policies and proactively replacing end-of-life equipment in each of its stores.
  • Exceptional achievement of the target for having achieved its emission reduction target.
  • Store Re-Certification Excellence for three stores in Detroit, Michigan, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin and Mokena, Ill., Achieving five consecutive years of GreenChill Store certification.

The EPA’s GreenChill program is a voluntary partnership with grocery retailers, refrigeration system manufacturers and chemical manufacturers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change. GreenChill provides supermarkets and other industry stakeholders with information and assistance to switch to more environmentally friendly refrigerants, reduce the amount of refrigerant they use, eliminate refrigerant leaks, implement best environmental practices and adopt green refrigeration technologies. There are nearly 13,000 GreenChill partner stores across the country.
