Secure IT Environments Completes Air Conditioning Upgrade and Construction of New UPS Room at Principality Building Society Data Center

Gradual replacement of end-of-life condensers with new and improved energy-efficient technology in a critical data center. Main data center space reclaimed with the construction of a brand new UPS facility.

July 21, 2021 – London, United Kingdom – Secure IT Environments Ltd, one of the UK’s leading modular, containerized and microcomputer data center design and construction companies, today announced the completion of a new UPS room, air handling (AHU) and air conditioning upgrade at the Principality Building Society in Cardiff, Wales – A mutual building society with over 500,000 members and 160 years of experience.

With existing AHUs and detection equipment approaching end of life, the Principality wanted to switch to equipment offering improved efficiency and resilience for the coming decade. A phased approach was taken, with the individual removal and replacement of each of the four AWUs. The new installation is based on GEA Multi-DENCO Energy Efficient DX air conditioning units, includes EC motors, electronic expansion valves and an inverter compressor, which provides excellent cooling and energy efficiency.

Secure IT Environments undertook all work related to the project, including the safe removal and environmental treatment of old AHUs and redundant F gases. Training was also provided to the data center team on the use of the new units.

The UPS upgrade was undertaken to address issues with existing end-of-life equipment needing to reclaim space in the main data center, which was very important. A new UPS room was located adjacent to the main DC facility, which included a new modular UPS system, air conditioning, raised floor, UPS electrical infrastructure, fire suppression and detection, pressure relief vent and unit. gas extraction.

Chris Wellfair, Project Manager at Secure IT Environments, added: “The level of energy efficiency and cooling improvement that can be achieved with modern AHUs is very impressive. Many customers find that as older equipment comes to the end of its life, or they want to switch to more environmentally friendly units as fluorinated gas regulations evolve, they make significant improvements. in terms of PUE, energy costs and maintenance with newer equipment. The new units installed at the Principality Building Society will have an immediate and positive impact on the data center, and for many years to come.
