Mid-island Stop & Shop loses its refrigeration

(July 16, 2021) Friday afternoon, workers at the Stop & Shop in the center of the island were rushing to fix a refrigeration failure that forced them to remove perishable foods from most of the store’s coolers.

At 5:30 p.m., several of the coolers were operational again, about four hours after a failure of the condenser on the roof of the supermarket between Pleasant Street and Sparks Avenue shut down the refrigeration system.

Food was moved to several refrigerated trailer trucks shortly after the malfunction. Store managers said this afternoon that the condenser is expected to be fully repaired overnight, with refrigerators and freezers fully stocked in the morning.

No food was lost, due to the rapid travel to the refrigerated trucks, they said.
