Q: What are the major emerging automotive trends that Tata Communications plans to enter or consolidate its presence in in the future?

Over the past decade, the auto industry has seen more disruption than many other industries, from manufacturing to autonomous driving to electric vehicles.

But the most significant change has been in the experience of drivers and passengers. Vehicles move from a hardware-defined machine to a software-defined machine. Three powerful trends – electrification, automation and connectivity – are redefining customer expectations and pushing manufacturers to increasingly turn to software solutions to meet them.

Most of the use cases that exist today support limited infotainment, navigation, and telematics capabilities.

Future user cases will revolve around an integrated ecosystem – vehicle-to-everything (V2X) integrations and software updates. These are expected to boost user adherence to subscription features, increase monetization opportunities for automotive OEMs, and improve passenger safety. Due to the nature of these use cases, they require critical connectivity.

Tata Communications is working in this area by investing in 5G private network technology, to support the testing of assisted / autonomous vehicles of the future. Tata Communications expects 5G and LP-WAN technologies, such as LTE Cat-M and Narrow Band IoT, to become increasingly essential to support connected vehicle use cases.

In addition, Tata Communications MOVE smart connected vehicle platform has been developed keeping in mind the requirements of modern software-driven vehicles. It has features that optimize over-the-air software updates (SOTA), to improve the success rates of SOTA activity. Tata Communications’ MOVE AI engine detects network connectivity issues (signal strength, quality, availability) and activates a backup profile to keep the vehicle always connected to the optimal network.

Three powerful trends – electrification, automation and connectivity – are redefining customer expectations and pushing manufacturers to increasingly turn to software solutions to meet them~

The platform supports the deployment of vehicles in 190 countries and territories, with access to more than 700 mobile network operators. This allows the platform to bring together information from multiple sources to: a) provide optimal quality of service for each use case and location

b) offer in-depth insights and use predictive analytics to deliver the best customer experience

Q Where do you see the Indian passenger car market in terms of uptake of connected car functionality?

Tech-savvy Indian consumers in India are embracing the change and expect automotive OEMs to improve their driving experience to keep passengers and vehicles safe. In the case of electric vehicles in particular, consumers want to monitor the battery status to avoid any problems and potential dangers and expect fuel savings through smart navigation techniques and energy consumption. effective.

Q: Can you give us some global examples of cars that deploy Tata Communications’ MOVE automotive connectivity platform?

A European luxury automaker has rolled out its connected cars to the road in 60 countries using Tata Communications MOVE. The automaker has implemented dual eSIMs in vehicles to support different use cases – one SIM for telematics and the other for navigation and infotainment services. This approach simplifies the invoicing process and optimizes costs for the business. It also ensures that local profiles can be easily selected and switched over the air anytime, anywhere.

A single layer of API abstraction provides seamless operations between different mobile network operators and between SIM card providers, for easy integration. Our access to over 700 mobile network operators ensures that there is no dependency on a single network. Tata Communications’ MOVE AI engine enables dynamic switching between mobile networks, to maintain optimal quality of service.

With our solution, the automaker was able to launch new connected car services initially in 60 countries where currently more than 200,000 cars actively use on-board services. With an average data consumption of over 1.2 GB / vehicle / month, vehicle owners benefit from enhanced in-car features and access to infotainment services.

The company is extending additional connected car services to 10% of heavy data users.

The automaker won an award at CES 2020, to be the “first in the world” to host the very first integrated dual SIM card (eSIM) automotive vehicle connectivity architecture.
