A unique solution from Bosch

The townhouse near the college. The ranch with a radiant floor in the suburbs. The high-end duplex. The downtown loft. The weekend hut by the lake. They all want to modernize and they all need both domestic hot water and hydronic heating. I think my quotes would be more competitive if there was a single device from a single source that could handle both. Why install a water heater and a boiler when you can do both?

Right now I get my tankless water heaters from a few wholesalers and my boilers from different wholesalers. My installation team complained about confusing the requirements of different manufacturers as they like to know what comes with the unit and what doesn’t. My service team wants to train with a single brand, to learn the ropes of controls and configurations. My accountant wants fewer salespeople, so there are fewer checks to cut. Life is not easy with so many complaints.

How about this idea from a source? The sellers of a few of the boiler brands I currently buy have sent me information about their offerings, but I really want access to a single source from a brand that I trust and that my prospects recognize. Would that increase company morale, make work flow easier, and also reduce those annoying and costly callbacks?

It was not difficult to discover that there is a device that makes both domestic water and space heating, by Bosch, a brand known for its quality, autonomy and reputation among consumers. The product is the Singular, and it is the newest model from Bosch which has an AFUE rating of 95%, and features an environmentally friendly low NOx metal fiber burner.

Everything, including the boiler pump, is installed and wired in a compact size cabinet (18.11 “W x 31.87” H) that mounts to the wall and saves space, which homeowners love . The low water cutoff is also already installed and wired. No more need to adapt the piping for the installation of the LWCO, which eliminates another potential place for a water leak; and, no more searching for a wiring diagram, which saves time and reduces frustration.

It weighs just 80 pounds and is easier to maneuver and climb down stairs.

Because the Singular model is available in two sizes, I can adapt the size to work. The model 4000 domestic hot water production can manage up to two showers continuously, while the 5200 model manages three showers. Sizing for the domestic is like what I already know.

The heat capacity of the Singular 4000 for space heating is 19,900 to 80,000 BTU / H.

For the Singular 5200, the heat capacity for space heating is increased from 19,900 to 140,000 BTU / H.

The heat capacity of the Singular 4000 for domestic hot water is 19,900 to 155,000 BTU / H.

The Singular 5200 has a domestic hot water capacity of 19,900 to 199,000 BTU / H.

The temperature range for space heating in both models is 82 degrees F to 180 degrees F. For direct hot water, the temperature range for both models is 86 degrees F to 140 degrees F.

What I really like about using the Singular for domestic hot water is how little the heat exchanger has to clean, as it is completely different from a regular tankless water heater. There are two stainless steel heat exchangers involved in the Singular. The gas burner heats the water in the boiler heat exchanger, and this hot water is pumped through one side of a separate brazed plate heat exchanger to heat the incoming cold water flowing from the other. side.

This is important because a regular snapshot uses the 400 degree flame to heat the incoming cold water, while the Singular uses 180 degree water to heat the incoming water. I know higher heat causes fouling faster, so using half the temperature will significantly reduce fouling, increasing the time between cleanings. My clients will appreciate the savings and my teams will be able to do more profitable work.

This combi is perfect for oil to gas conversions. If we hook it up to natural gas, it’s ready to go. If we hook it up to propane, we can just install the supplied conversion kit before hanging it on the wall.

Installing a new flue is required when using a high efficiency gas appliance, and Bosch gives me the flexibility to use a variety of flue materials. I can always use PVC where I am authorized, my teams know it well and the availability is good. I can use CPVC, but polypropylene, which is also approved, is cheaper and more and more available every day. Vent pipe lengths are generous, 2 “pipes can go up to 60 feet, while 3” pipes can go up to 150 feet. An exhaust gas temperature sensor guarantees safe operation.

My installation manager likes the convenience of space heating connections since the boiler pump is already installed – it’s one side of a primary secondary connection that is already made. If the space heating application is a single zone with minimal pressure drop (like a cast iron radiator job with a t-stat and huge pipes), it can just direct it at full flow, using the pump already installed. I like when he likes something.

The cabinet is small, but contains many functions of domestic hot water capacity and space heating. The convenience of domestic hot water and space heating from a single source simplifies installation, maintenance and billing, allowing me to focus on how to grow my business. I’ll be citing this on the projects I mentioned at the start: the townhouse, ranch, duplex, loft, and cabin.
